RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
