Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
